JOLLY LLB

Taking risks with new stories has become a trend in Bollywood, albeit a good one. Jolly LLB is one such film where filmmaker Subhash Kapoor has tried to do something new and different. Jolly LLB is something which has been seen in Hindi films previously, but only as a bit part of in the larger story. Court sequences have been a norm in Hindi films but here in Jolly LLB the makers of this film have presented it in a fresh manner and managed to win audiences heart with a simple story.

Joly LLB is a story of Jagdish Tyagi (Arshad Warsi), fondly called as Jolly. He is a lawyer in Meerut but he finds no success there and thus plans to move to Delhi where he thinks he will find better career opportunities. On moving to Delhi and for two months of staying there his life is still pretty much the same- roaming around courts and finding clients for trivial work. One day he meets advocate Rajpal (Boman Irani). Jolly aspires to be like Rajpal.  Rajpal is handling a case of hit and run case which he eventually manages to win. Next day, to Jolly’s happiness he discovers that the case has not been won fairly. He thinks this is his big opportunity and plans to take the same case forward challenging Rajpal despite knowing that he would be difficult to defeat. How Jolly manages to win the case against Rajpal is what forms the story of the film.

Arshad Warsi as Jolly/Jagdish is good as a fun loving guy. He has managed to get the nuances of a lawyer but there is sameness in all his performances. Boman Irani as Rajpal was a strong performer in the entire film but Boman has done roles much better than this in his illustrious acting career. Amrita Rao as Sandhya who plays Arshad Warsi’s love interest has a very less screen space but with her simplicity in her acting she manages to leave a mark. Her acting is good. The supporting cast which includes Manoj Pahwa, Mohan Agashe, Sanjay Mishra, Harsh Chhaya, etc have played their parts well.  Overall the performances in the film are good, but they still could have been better especially when the cast has talented actors like Boman Irani and Arshad Warsi.

Director Subhash Kapoor has managed to do something different. The story, screenplay and dialogue is also by Subhash Kapoor. As a director he was ordinary this time, he has done much better in his earlier films. As a story and screenplay writer he was bit different. He has chosen a different theme and did it pretty well. The editing of the film was normal it could have been better. The cinematography was very ordinary. Dialogues of the film were quite good and they do make you laugh.

Music of the film by Krsna is good but the songs loose the pace of the film. Two songs Ajnabi by Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal and Daru Peeke Nachna by Mika and Shreya Ghoshal are the songs which are like unnecessary in the film and spoil the pace of the film. The album is good to hear but the songs in the film are not a good decision.

On the whole Jolly LLB tries to do something different and to a large extent succeeds in it. A very good attempt by Subhash Kapoor. This one is recommended- if you want to watch something new and refreshing go for this one. This is a onetime but a definite must watch.

My Verdict: 3/5
