Imtiaz Ali has made a niche for himself. Even if the aam junta fails to connect with his films his loyal audience will definitely appreciate his cinema. He was praised by the aam junta for Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. The same audience will have their hearts broken because of Jab Harry Met Sejal. The honesty and dedication of Imtiaz Ali while creating Jab Harry Met Sejal is clearly visible on screen but it is just that things did not fall in right place making this most awaited meet a disappointing mess.
Story of Jab Harry Met Sejal is nothing exceptional or great. Imtiaz has always had simple plot for his films but the other details in his writing are noteworthy and have that depth. In Jab Harry Met Sejal his writing is not up to the mark. The intensity is lacking somewhere. No matter how attentive you are while watching the film and try to understand Imtiaz Ali but you just fail to get his point.
He starts with a melody introducing his hero and immediately after that enters his heroine. Their journey to find something commence. You expect fun, excitement and are waiting to be a part of their journey but unfortunately their journey doesn’t interests you much. Initial twenty minutes are bearable with the hope of an amazing ride ahead but you are left with nothing but just events happening one after the other. Within first thirty minutes of the film you loose interest from it with a very heavy heart. Imtiaz Ali has created some noteworthy moments in the film which are excellently performed, brilliantly executed and has that required intensity but you have already lost interest from the film and do not mind missing these noticeable moments. The film does get slightly better towards the emd of it but that doesn’t help much is fulfilling your entertainment hunger. The suspense about the ring is as lame as the reason for Kattappa killing Baahubali.
Shah Rukh Khan has a different character in the film. Throughout the film he maintains it. Even though this one will surely not be one of his most remembered character but he plays his part well. Anushka Sharma is on an altogether different tangent. She has been surprising us with her every single performance. She owns Sejal like nobody’s business. Anushka convinces you that she is an indispensable part of Jab Harry Met Sejal. She has rightly got her Gujarati accent. She makes you laugh and teaches you the sincerity and madness required for true love. Both of them have done an outstanding job.
Imtiaz Ali is brilliant in his execution and satisfying in writing but misses the mark while presenting the entire film. He has managed to get some mind boggling locations. He brings out the best from his actors. He just fails to connect emotionally with the audience. Pritam has done a highly impressive job with the compositions in the film. Doesn’t matter how the songs affect the film you still enjoy them. KU Mohanan captures some great shots. Editing of Aarti Bajaj is not bad at all. Technically the film is not that bad.
So many factors favouring Jab Harry Met Sejal is just not enough. The film may have sounded great on paper and also Imtiaz Ali must have had a lovely vision of this film but Harry and Sejal just dont connect with you that easily. Two stars for the two stars in the film. Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma fans will definitely enjoy them in the film.
