Mani Ratnam always presents his love stories in a different way. He has his unique touch to his love stories. The way he portrays relationship is something that only he can do it with much ease. Kaatru Veliyidai is no different. The film has Mani Ratnam written all over it but misses the cult mark due to some unexplainable reasons. While watching the film you get that feeling of mediocrity which does not happen with a Mani Ratnam film.
Kaatru Veliyidai is a typical love story. It is simply commendable how Mani Ratnam has given it a realistic touch making the film very easy to connect with for the audience. When the love story of VC and Leela goes through bad times towards the end of the film, everyone will find themselves in those moments doesn’t matter what kind of relation you share with your loved ones. That was the major highlight of the writing of Kaatru Veliyidai. Otherwise the writing of Mani Ratnam is noteworthy. Too many things happen and the screenplay is simply gripping. Kudos to Mani Ratnam for always giving a new face to the love stories in Indian cinema.
Brilliant part is written for Aditi Rao Hydari and she does complete justice to it by giving such an honest and dedicated performance. She is effortless and that deserves her more praise. She totally steals the show with her simplicity and the headstrong nature of her character. You will surely love her in the film. Unfortunately it is Karthi who is not in his character at places which spoils the fun big time. He has one single expression most of the time. He looks cautious for no reason be it while dancing or a dramatic scene or a romantic scene. He is sort of disappointment in this one. The supporting cast has no chance to steal the limelight so they are just good.
Like Mani Ratnam, A.R.Rahman is an equally big legend. His compositions take no time to make you fall in love with them. All the tracks are worth being your favourite and the album deserves a special place in your collection. Background score and sound design make the movie watching experience more enjoyable. Background score may not be noticed but surely helps the film a lot.
Technically the film is just perfect. Breathtaking, eye pleasing and every other adjective of praise will understate the cinematography of Kaatru Veliyidai. Every single frame is a masterpiece art. Regular scenes like that of hospital or bedroom or drawing room are brilliantly lit making the frame look nothing less than magic. Have never seen snow clad locations look so beautiful even in paintings. Cinematography helps Kaatru Veliyidai big time in making it worth a watch. Editing of the film is perfect and does not waste even a moment. VFX of the film is quite impressive. The war scenes look real because of some good VFX. Special mention for the costumes just because they manage to grab your attention.
Kaatru Veliyidai can be watched once without any hesitation. After all it is a love story by Mani Ratnam. Somehow sadly this one does not make me feel like watching it again and that happens rarely for a Mani Ratnam film. None the less it is a good film so just watch it. Also Karthi, please act little better next time.
Rating: 3/5 (Being a little generous)
