Shashank Khaitan tries to put his opinions about many things Indian society deals with; in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Good thing about it is that it is not preachy in any way but not so good thing about it is that there is nothing new in Shaahank’s style of storytelling. He tries to say a lot of important things through the film and also makes sure that he does it with honesty. Shashank brilliantly shows the regressive thinking, patriarchy of a generation elder to the current one. He successfully manages to portray the mindset of current generation. The various bonds he has shown in the film are so raw; be it brothers, friends, father-son, sisters, brother and sister-in-law. These bonds in the film is one of the highlight of the film since they are so prominent and add a different kind of importance to the film.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania starts bang on promising a joyride filled with emotions and humor. First half is crazy with loads of humor, brilliantly written scenes and not so good songs that do not affect your movie watching experience. The bus scene gets the maximum amount of laughter, it is brilliantly written, carefully executed and exceptionally performed. Even though the entire film is full of cliches it does not become predictable even for a second. Shashank smartly manages to create such an atmosphere where you are lost in the film not much interested about the further happenings. Problem starts right from the start of the second half. Writing of the film lacks the spark, it slowly starts becoming uninteresting where Shashank adds Tamma Tamma and Roke Na Ruke to make things interesting but that just does not work. Shashank struggles a lot to match the second half of the film with the first one. By the end of the film your excitement dips which was well built till the interval and you leave the theater partially satisfied as an entertainer.
Varun Dhawan can be termed as a revelation considering films like Badrinath Ki Dulhania are his forte. He has done a great job in this one but his efforts are commendable. He makes sure that this one is not just like his other work. Badri is fun loving and adorable. Alia Bhatt deserves all the praises. She is so good that even if she makes a second long appearance in the film she will shine in that too. She has literally owned the character of Vaidehi and she speaks out the heart of millions of girls through her act. Alia becomes better with her every new film. Supporting cast was quite impressive especially Sahil Vaid and Aparshakti Khurrana. Shashank Kahitan’s writing and direction is decent as that is exactly what makes Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Music of the film is way below average. Not a single memorable song. Surrender Hua is interesting because of Ganesh Acharya’s moves. Rest other songs are situational demands and to retain the essence of a commercial Hindi film. Badrinath Ki Dulhania is not a film which makes you notice its technical aspects. The film is made with an intention for audience to enjoy.
Overall Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a strictly average film. Can be watched once for Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Shashank Khaitan and an entertaining first half.
