OK JAANU

OK Jaanu is frame to frame copied version of Mani Ratnam’s delightful 2015 romance O Kadhal Kanmani. This one is a perfect example of how difficult it is to make a remake and do justice to the original. That is the biggest problem with OK Jaanu. Film fails big time to connect with the audience and there are few but major reasons for that.

Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor may look excellent together but what about their performance. If you see O Kadhal Kanmani, Aditya and Shraddha don’t even do half justice to the act in the original. Both of them are lost in their own world, in fact their weak performance makes the story loose its charm. Aditya Roy Kapoor has managed to get his character right but is just not convincing. It is very difficult to see Shraddha Kapoor in this one. She struggles to do even a simple scene, seems acting is not her cup of tea. Her glasses look does not suit her at all and she looks fake when she sings classical. Their so called great chemistry is invisible throughout the film. Performances has spoiled everything in the film. Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson are genuine, the only performances worth watching. Remaining cast of the film is just bad. Don’t know who dubbed for Kittu Gidwani but the voice did not suit her. The only person to be blamed here is Shaad Ali who could not even do half a good as his mentor Mani Ratnam.

A.R Rahman is genius when it comes to music but I won’t blame him for the sad compositions of OK Jaanu. O Kadhal Kanmani remains to be my most enjoyed album. Songs are changed, the essence of the original ones is missing and the new ones aren’t good enough. Background score is good because they have the tunes of the original. Enna Sona in black and white, that’s the only good part of the music in the film. All the other departments of the film need not be considered as there is not even one percent change from the original. Special mention to costumes and production design department as they grab your attention at many places.

Overall OK Jaanu is totally avoidable irrespective of you have seen the original or not. Film has a fresh take on relationships but it does not look convincing. OK Jaanu does not have half as much soul as O Kadhal Kanmni. Watching O Kadhal kanmani with subtitles is a better deal.
