Abhishek Chaubey is a director with a talent like no one in the industry. After two instalments of Ishqiya, with Udta Punjab he takes his craft of direction to an altogether different level.
Udta Punjab is all about drugs issue in Punjab. The film could have been a documentary with A-list actors. Abhishek Chaubey balances the entire film on that thin line between a documentary and a commercial film on such issue. Not for a second Abhishek loses the track and the film is thoroughly entertaining. Abhishek with ease highlights the issue bringing out the best from his cast and that’s what makes Udta Punjab worth a watch.
Shahid Kapoor is stunning, Alia Bhatt is phenomenal, Diljit Dosanjh is superb and Kareena Kapoor Khan is great. Alia Bhatt shines in her act. She has got some brilliant scenes and she nails it with perfection. When she gets molested for first time, her first meet with Shahid are the scenes to look out for. Shahid Kapoor has done some great work in recent past so his performance in Udta Punjab shouldn’t come as a surprise but his performance creates a great impact. He makes sure he is the talking point of the film. Abhishek Chaubey’s direction is the highlight of the film. His vision and execution makes Udta Punjab special. Music in the film takes a backseat irrespective how good are Amit Trivedi’s compositions.
Coming to some noteworthy technicalities. Scene transformation is outstanding. Three stories are going on side by side, but switching between the stories visually is been beautifully done by Abhishek. Locations are authentic. The entire look and feel of the film is nothing short than perfection for such story. Editing seems to be perfect.
Udta Punjab may not find takers easily among the masses, but this one is definitely for everyone as an insight from our very own country entertainingly. This one is a must watch.
