Bajirao Mastani was Bhansali’s dream project for the longest time, ever since he entered movie making business. This longest wait of Bhansali has benn paid off very well. The film is perfect in many aspects.
Topmost STARS of Bollywood; Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra have turned out to be great performers with this film. Priyanka Chopra; National Award winner performed as if this was her last role of her life. She has successfully convinced the audience that Kashibai was exactly what she has portrayed on screen. She shines out in the entire star cast. Ranveer Singh as Peshwa Bajirao leaves you speechless right from his first scene. He makes you believe with his every performance, no role is impossible for him. Since both these actors play Maharashtrians their command over Marathi in the film is commendable. Very little Marathi in the film but then when these two say something in Marathi they convincingly look typical Maharashtrians. Their accent is pure and authentic. Deepika Padukone as Mastani is beautiful and strong. Her performances in past few film have been becoming better and better, so this one was just one of her better performances. One good thing about Sanjay Leela Bhansali is that his supporting cast is as good as its primary cast. Milind Soman, Aditya Pancholi, Vaibhav Tatwawadi, Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjerakar, Raza Murad are all outstanding in their respective roles. Tanvi Azmi shines in the supporting cast.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes love stories in his own unique way and Bajirao Mastani was no different. The chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone also between Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh is like never seen before. More importantly the war portions do not dominate the romance in the film. Music of the film is pitch perfect. Bhansali makes sure the music and background score takes the film to an altogether different level. When it comes to production design there is no match to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films. Every single set was flawless with lots of detailing. Cinematography was breathtaking.
No doubt that Bajirao Mastani is a very good film and it needs to be watched but the film do lack few things. Film has a very weak narrative. Few uninteresting scenes in the film makes it a bit unstable as far as audience engagement is concerned. War sequences are good but not too impressive. Good thing is that they are not too long. They look very ordinary; especially after the epic Baahubali and Jodha Akbar. Film has lots of good things but it gives you a feeling of something missing in it. Your attachment/ feeling for the characters in the film is not too strong. Editing was a bit confusing, at times the film makes you feel something is missing in it. Two songs are trimmed and definitely many scenes must have been deleted to keep the film as short as possible, which is visible. Bajirao Mastani being Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s dream project may not be his best work till date but it is definitely worth a watch for his vision, performances, music and of course the most beautiful sets in Hindi films.
