Unfortunately there is nothing Shaandaar about Shaandaar. The film is a true example of destroyed by success. Post Queen there were sky high expectations from Vikas Bahl and all of them lead to disappointment in Shaandaar.
The reason of using animation for flashback was terrible. The opening long animation sequence gives you hint and prepares you for disappointment. Shaandaar is badly written. Story and screenplay is very amateur. Film has a heartless storyline. You cannot relate with the story or characters in it. It is very over the top. Treatment is a big spoiler. Production design is lavish but that has turned against the film. Vikas Bahl whose locations of his previous films were streets and pubs of Paris and lanes of Delhhi could not handle the grand castles and rich family. Shaandaar questions you whether the film characters really exist on this planet. Shahid Kapoor was very good in his role. Alia Bhatt played her part well. Undoubtedly her weakest work till date. Pankaj Kapur, Sushma Seth were wasted. So was the remaining supporting cast. Music was decent. Typical Amit Trivedi compositions. Production design was useless for this bad film. Background score could not help single scene look good. Editing was bad; predictable and uninteresting.
Few good things in Shaandaar were the chemistry of Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, Alia Bhatt and Pankaj Kapur’s father daughter relationship and climax which gives out a great message. All these helped in saving the film but were unsuccessful. Last 20-25 minutes of the film you feel good. Throughout the film you just wait for it to get over. Would not recommend Shaandaar. Rather wait for it’s satellite broadcasting. My rating is for Shahid, Alia and the climax of the film.
