EK THI DAAYAN…

Films on fresh and new concept are very rarely made in bollywood and even if they are made it’s a real incident like Special 26 or it is something about making a film on never touched topic like Vicky Donor. Ek Thi Daayan (ETD) is from those film which are made earlier in bollywood but this one is very new in bollywood. Horror movies are being made in bollywood since ages but making a horror movie with a refreshing concept and so creatively like never before, Ek Thi Daayan is one such film.

Bobo (Emraan Hashmi) is a successful and very popular magician. His stage acts start getting wrong because of his horrified past. His love interest Tamra (Huma Qureshi) decides to make Bobo move out of his past ans start a new life. Due to lot’s of disturbance in Bobo’s life he visits Psychiatrist where he goes into flashback via hypnotism where Bobo’s childhood is revealed. Post that Bobo and Tamra get married and start a new life, but then they meet Lisa Dutt (Kalki Koechlin) who Bobo belives to be a witch and has come in life to destroy her. Will Bobo be able to live freely from all this witch drama, is Lisa just like Diana (Konkona Sen Sharma) is what needs to found out in ETD.

Emraan Hashmi as Bobo is perfectly casted. There are not many scenes of him as a magician where one could doubt his acting capabilities, but then he has performed very well. Emraan is definitely improving as an actor with every passing movie. All the female fans are about to go crazy for him after they watch him in this movie. Konkona Sen Sharma as Diana is again brilliant like her any other performance. She has portrayed a role of a caring mother and an evil witch fabulously. No two opinion about Konkona’s performance. Kalki Koechlin as Lisa Dutt has very less screen space but she did a decent job. In fact she didn’t had the required time on scerrn to prove her acting skills. Huma Qureshi as Tamre is like a surprise package. Her performance as a sweet and caring girlfriend and wife throughout the movie and then a complete 360 degree change in the climax need to be looked out for. Post Wasseypur Huma just goes on impressing the industry and her fans. The supporting cast: Pavan Malhotra, Rajatava Dutta and Bhavesh Balchandani did their roles perfect to the T. Overall performances of ETD were fantastic.

Kannan Iyer who debuted as a director has a long way to go in bollywood provided he executes such brilliant topics with such innovation and creativity. The direction of the film was flawless. Every single shot is beautifully directed and yes most importantly they are successful in scaring you. Story and Screenplay by Vishal Bhardwaj and Mukul Sharma is outstanding. Story of old genre beautifully written and all the incidents in the film very well backed up with proper justification. The film gives you no chance of complaining about a single scene. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is to the point. In second half due to it’s dull plot melodious songs are included (not forcefully) but that does not affect the audience. Vishal Bardwaj’s dialogues are a step ahead than ordinary dialogues. Not very great but perfect according to the film. Sham Kaushal’s action is worth applauding, according to the script nothing extraordinary but then he did his best and the climax scene look very scary and kept you glued to your seat. Special mention for the VFX of the film. Scenes where the Dayan’s are revealed the VFX is just outstanding, no less than any Hollywood film.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s music has it’s own flavour, but he is never lacking as far as the taste of current generation is considered. Yaaram by Sunidhi Chauhan and Clinton Cerejo is soulful with slow and fast beats. Totey Udd Gaye is fun filled song in voices of Rekha Bhardwaj and Suresh Wadkar. Kali Kali sung by Clinton Cerejo and Lautungi Main sung by Rekha Bhardwaj play in background and a good to hear. Sapna Re Sapna sung by wonderboy Padmanabh Gaikwad is underestimated. It comes in end credits when half of the audience is left leaving this pearl unnoticed. Lyrics of Gulzar and Music of Vishal Bhardwaj is a perfect combo. This pair has given some amazing music in Kaminey, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, 7 Khoon Maaf etc and ETD is no less. The music of ETD is just superb. The background score by Clinton Cerejo is equally good.

Ek Thi Daayan is fresh and innovative concept. It’s not a normal ghost story but a story, but an experimental premise which stands out of all in this genre. Kannan has tried to do something which was never ever seen before in Hindi cinema and he has succeeded in that. The film being in horror genre completely stands to it and scares you like anything. The film has a brilliant first half and slightly dull second half compared to the first one yet its a good watch.  Looking at the premise of the film it’s somewhat equal to any Hollywood horror film. Undoubtly one of the best film of 2013 till date. This one is a must watch and if you are a weak heart person then God better save you. Try not to miss this one.
