RANGREZZ

Films exploring friendships have always been successful in Bollywood. Be it Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and the very recent Kai Po Che. It won’t be too far-fetched to say that stories of friends have become a success formula. Rangrezz has tried to do something different and manages to win your heart. This is one good piece of entertainment. Watching this movie with group of friends will be real fun.

Rangrezz is story of Rishi (Jacky Bhagnani), Winu (Amitosh Nagpal) and Pakkya (Vijay Varma). All three of them are having a good time in life. The bond of friendship between these three is very strong and they will stand for each other in their good and as well as bad times. One day Joy (Raghav Channa) comes to Rishi seeking help. He is in love with Jasmine (Akshara Gowda) but both their families are against them getting married. Rishi, Winu and Pakkya help these two to get together. All three of them do all possible things to bring Joy and Jasmine together. They get hurt physically in the process, Police arrests all three of them as Joy and Jasmine’s families have a very strong political background- but they don’t regret any of this for the simple reason because they feel what they’re doing is right. Meanwhile Rishi’s marriage is broken with his childhood love Megha (Priya Anand). After going through this difficult phase in life they start a new life and start a catering business. After sometime they come to know that all the hardship they went through was a waste as Joy and Jasmine have split. To get proper justification for what these three guys did they make sure that they know the reason behind Joy and Jasmine breaking up. Finally Rishi joins police and finds a new group of friends like him.

Jacky Bhagnani as Rishi was decent. One can see slight improvement in his acting skills. Overall Jacky did a good job and if he works little hard on his acting then I am sure he’s going to go a long way. The other two protagonists Amitosh and Vijay were good. Both of them had different traits of their own and they did their job perfectly. All three protagonists did a commendable job in making it look real and one could easily relate to the bond of friendship the three shared. Priya Anand as Megha had very small role. After impressing us in English Vinglish this is not what one expected from her. It would have been better if she would have not done this film as any other girl could have fit in as Megha. The supporting cast which included Akshara Gowda, Rishikesh Deshpandey, Pankaj Tripathi and most importantly Rajpal Yadav were all good. Rajpal Yadav especially as usual was at his best. He makes you laugh whenever he is on screen. Overall the performances in Rangrezz were good.

Priyadarshan who is popular for making comedy films in Bollywood has tried to do something new and serious-minded and has succeeded up to some extent. He has done films outside of his comfort zone even previously in the form of Aakrosh, Tezz, Virasat and this time also he has managed to live up to his audience’s expectations. His direction was good. People who watch and remember Priyadarshan movies will be familiar with his some of his oft-used camera angles- in this film also one finds them. This film is a remake of a South Indian film. The story by Samuthirakani is good but somehow it feels that it has not properly executed. The story on paper is very good but when it came to putting it on screen there was something lacking. Screenplay by Mushtaq Sheikh is quite good. He has managed to do quite a good job. Editing could have been better.  The first half of the film has nothing to offer till the interval sequence. Second half is good and that’s when you start liking the film.  Cinematography was very ordinary, and again if you watch Priyadarshan’s films regularly, the locations used in the film are quite similar. Dialogues of the film are good at some places and overall only average.

Music by Sajid-Wajid is good as far as the film is concerned. All the songs keep with the pace of the film and most of them come at a proper time in the story. The romantic track in the voice of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is forcefully added in the film. Overall music is good in the film but it lacks potential of topping the music charts or even becoming a hit number and remaining in the mind of the listeners. Sajid-Wajid can definitely compose better music than this.

Rangrezz had the potential to tell a very good story of friendship but weak editing and average direction makes the film just a decent watch. The film might appeal to the masses. If you really want to watch a movie this weekend you can go for this one. It’s strictly and only decent.

My Verdict:2.5/5
