Films based on true incidents tend to grab your attention quickly as the audience is eager to see the cinematic representation of the incident or even get to know about the event altogether. Special 26 is also one among those films which grab audience’s attention as soon as the first trailer of the film comes out. People had high expectations from Neeraj Pandey after A Wednesday and Akshay Kumar fans wanted to see him doing something which he has never done. Special 26 is indeed a special film for the makers, viewers and for Bollywood as an industry.

Film is about four con men Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar), P.K.Sharma (Anupam Kher), Joginder (Rajesh Sharma) and Iqbal (Kishor Kadam). They form a team of fake-CBI officials and raid various places all over the country. Ranveer Singh (Jimmy Shergil) and Shantiji (Divya Dutta), both of them Police Inspectors are suspended because they help these four con men in a raid thinking they were doing their job. They get a sudden shock when they realize that they were fooled and then comes Wasim Khan (Manoj Bajpai), the real CBI officer and decides to investigate this case and find these four con-men. Meanwhile the love track between Ajay Singh and Priya Chavan (Kajal Aggarwal) is simultaneously going on where Priya is going to get married to someone else but Ajay promises that he won’t let this happen and Ajay also plans a big final raid in Bombay. How will Wasim tackle this out-of-the-ordinary situation? Will these fake CBI officials get caught and will Shantiji and Ranveer Singh get their jobs back? What will happen with Ajay and Priya’s love life? Answers to all these questions can only and only be found in Special 26.

Akshay Kumar as Ajay Singh is seen as a CBI officer. He has never done this kind of a role at any point in his career. He just amazes you by his acting skills like he has never before. Anupam Kher as P.K.Sharma or Sharmaji as usual is outstanding and gives tough time to all his co-actors. Anupam Kher is simply superb. Manoj Bajpai is also very good. He plays this real CBI Officer who is very intense and disciplined. Manoj has done such work earlier but in this film there is an extraordinary spark in his enactment. Jimmy Shergil as Ranver Singh who plays a cop is good. Even though he has nothing much to do and also less screen time compared to others, he is good and has done full justice to his role. Kishor Kadam and Rajesh Sharma did a very good job as supporting cast in the film. The ladies had very little to do yet Divya Dutta as Shantiji was very humorous and manages to make you laugh. Kajal Aggarwal was also good but her role was not all that important. Overall the performances in Special 26 are praiseworthy especially those by Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and Manoj Bajpai.

Neeraj Pandey is back on the Director’s Seat after four years and his last massive success- A Wednesday. He has managed to keep his audience engaged throughout the film very well. His way of dividing the screen into two parts and showing two different things happening at two different places at the same time just increases the cinematic brilliance of the film and it is good to watch these scenes. Direction by Neeraj Pandey was just brilliant. Story and Screenplay was also by Neeraj Pandey and like direction he has handled these two things equally well. The story is very good and all the characters are explained very well in the film. Editor Shree Narayan Singh could have done better. There is a marriage sequence which disturbs the pace of the film but overall the editing is decent. Cinematography by Bobby Singh is simply amazing. He has given a very good feel of the 80′s to the film. Dialogues of the film are ordinary apart from a few witty one-liners.

Music of the film is given by M.M.Kreem. Dhar Pakkad sung by Bappi Lahiri is good to hear and comes with the end credits. Mujh Mein Tu sung by M.M.Kreem and Keerthi Sagatia plays in the background while the love angle is going on in the film and is good to hear. Same with Kaun Mera sung by Chaitra. Gore Mukhhde Pe is sung by Aman Trikha and Shreya Ghoshal and the music for this song is given by Himesh Reshamiya. It is good to hear but disturbs the pace of the film. Overall the music of Special 26 is not special but it suits the film.

Special 26 is one of its kind films. It does not have normal Bollywood film ingredients but yet entertains like any other Bollywod film. Neeraj Pandey has managed to incorporate humor in this serious film and make his audience laugh. He has also kept his audience well on the edge of their seats till the climax. First half has a lot of the romantic track and only two small but amazingly executed raids. The second half is simply superb and your eyes are constantly glued to the screen. Overall Special 26 is a special film and is a must watch. This one is not to be missed, come what may!

My Verdict : 4/5
